Mechanical Engineer – Contract Position
CarToCamp | Birdsboro, PA | Immediate Start – June 30, 2026
About CarToCamp
CarToCamp designs and manufactures vehicle-specific sleeping platforms and storage systems for the car camping community. We are a small, fast-moving product company building innovative products for outdoor enthusiasts — and we take pride in the quality and precision of everything we make.
Position Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to join our team on a W-2 hourly contract basis, beginning immediately and running through June 30, 2026. This role is for someone who thrives in a rapid prototyping environment and is comfortable moving quickly from concept to physical product. You will work closely with our engineering team to develop and refine new sleeping platforms and drawer systems for vehicle-specific applications.
Employment Type: W-2 Hourly Contract
Schedule: 40 hours/week
Pay Rate: $23.00 – $30.00 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Birdsboro, PA (on-site)
Contract End Date: June 30, 2026
Duties
- Collaborate with the engineering team to rapidly prototype new products and prepare them for market readiness
- Contribute to the development of vehicle-specific sleeping platforms and drawer systems
- Support all phases of the product development cycle, from initial design through functional testing
Responsibilities
- Create and iterate on 3D models using Fusion 360
- Generate toolpaths and G-code for CNC routing operations using VCarve Pro
- Set up, operate, and monitor a CNC router during production and prototyping runs
- Test-fit fabricated parts, identify design issues, and implement iterative improvements to fit and function
Preferred Skills
- Rapid prototyping methodology and mindset. We move faster than you've ever moved before.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Fusion 360 preferred)
- Hands-on CNC router experience, including toolpath creation and machine operation.
Physical Requirements
This role involves light manufacturing work in a shop environment. Candidates must be able to:
- Lift, carry, and position materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Stand, bend, and move throughout the workspace for extended periods
- Work safely in a shop environment with active machinery
CarToCamp complies with all applicable Pennsylvania and federal workplace safety regulations. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Compensation & Terms
- Pay is hourly at the rate listed above, paid on a regular basis in accordance with Pennsylvania wage payment law
- This position has an anticipated end date of June 30, 2026; continuation beyond that date is possible but not guaranteed
- As a W-2 employee, applicable federal and state taxes will be withheld
- This position does not include employer-sponsored benefits
Note From Nathan (Co-Founder)
- We do not have the coolest offices or the most competitive pay. We are a small startup company made up of Penn State Berks graduates from 2020-2022. What we do have is the opportunity to get hands on with consumer product design in the outdoor products space. This is exactly the job I would have wanted when I graduated, but there are not many outdoor products brands based in Pennsylvania. So we started our own. Now we're rapidly growing and want you to join us if this is sounds like you too.
How to Apply
Send your resume and a brief note about your relevant experience to nathan@cartocamp.com. Don't worry about a cover letter, they're dumb. Feel free to include photos or links to past projects — especially anything involving CNC work, fabricated parts, or prototype builds.
